On March 11, 2025, Shell was honored with the Masaaki Imai Distinction Award for its exemplary commitment to Continuous Improvement (CI) practices. This award, presented in recognition of Shell’s substantial contributions to operational excellence, served as the highlight of an inspiring event hosted at Shell’s Energy Transition Campus in Amsterdam. With global leaders in the field of CI in attendance, the day was a celebration of not just Shell’s remarkable achievements but also of the global CI community’s shared journey toward operational excellence.
Shell gave a comprehensive presentation on its CI journey, led by Victoria Guy, Vice President of Operational Excellence, and Michiel van Noort, General Manager of Continuous Improvement, the session took us through the company’s evolution in CI deployment. Shell’s commitment to building a culture of excellence is evident in their clear, structured approach, which has spanned over two decades, evolving from localized initiatives to a globally integrated strategy. This transformation is reflected in Shell’s robust performance framework, which is now a vital part of the company’s operational strategy.
Shell’s journey has not been without its challenges. As Victoria emphasized, the road to continuous improvement is never linear, and every milestone has been shaped by a commitment to learning and adapting. The company’s efforts have resulted in material value impacts and breakthrough performance improvements across various sectors. Their approach, underpinned by a strong people development strategy, has seen one-third of Shell’s 80,000 employees trained in CI methodologies, with a significant number also participating in CI projects, showcasing the company’s deep-rooted dedication to fostering a culture of excellence at all levels.

During this day, participants had the chance to engage in a hands-on activity and contribute their insights and ideas on how to sustain and expand CI initiatives. Flipcharts filled with thoughts on the future of CI practices highlighted the collective aspiration for a more interconnected and adaptive CI community. This exercise fostered open dialogue and allowed attendees to reflect on their own CI journeys, encouraging the exchange of best practices and innovative approaches.

The day culminated with the much-anticipated Masaaki Imai Distinction Award presentation. The award ceremony, a moment of collective pride for all those involved in CI at Shell, symbolized the company’s long-term commitment to integrating KAIZEN™ principles into every aspect of its operations.
The Masaaki Imai Distinction Award, named after the founder of Kaizen Institute, celebrates organizations that not only implement CI practices but also nurture a culture that prioritizes continuous learning, collaboration, and long-term success. Shell’s achievement marks a significant milestone in their CI journey and serves as an inspiring example for organizations worldwide.
Shell’s recognition is a testament to the transformative power of Continuous Improvement and the role it plays in driving organizational success. It is also a reminder that true CI is not a one-time project but an ongoing commitment that requires leadership, perseverance, and a willingness to embrace change. As the global CI Community moves forward, Shell’s example will undoubtedly continue to inspire others to pursue excellence in their own journeys of transformation.
The event highlighted not only Shell’s accomplishments but also the collective strength of the CI community. By sharing experiences, learning from one another, and celebrating successes, we ensure that the pursuit of excellence remains at the forefront of organizational strategies. The Masaaki Imai Distinction Award is not just an accolade; it is a call to action for all of us to continue pushing the boundaries of what is possible through Continuous Improvement.
