On April 30th, Kaizen Institute had the pleasure of participating in WWA Studios’ annual Practice Day, held at the prestigious Jesus College, Oxford University. With architectural teams from both their Oxford and London offices in attendance, the day offered an inspiring opportunity to reflect, connect, and embrace new ways of thinking under the theme of Continuous Improvement.
Introducing the KAIZEN™ Mindset
James Stevenson, representing Kaizen Institute, opened the session with a dynamic and thought-provoking talk on the origins and principles of the KAIZEN™ methodology. Drawing from years of experience helping organisations around the world adopt a mindset of continuous improvement, James introduced key themes including:
- The historical roots of KAIZEN™ in post-war Japan
- Common organisational paradigms and the natural resistance to change
- The distinction between value-added and non-value-added activities
- Real-world case studies of continuous improvement in action
By reframing improvement as an ongoing, collective effort—not a one-off project—James encouraged the WWA team to see their everyday work through a new lens: one where incremental changes compound into transformative results.
“Improvement starts with curiosity.”
It is in the moments when we ask why things are done a certain way that the seeds of change are planted. This idea resonated throughout the session, where curiosity was not only welcomed but encouraged as a catalyst for progress. Through interactive discussions and simple metaphors—such as the act of clasping your hands in an unfamiliar way to feel the discomfort of change—participants were invited to experience, firsthand, how the smallest shifts in perception can lead to lasting behavioural transformation.
Curiosity opens the door to experimentation, reflection, and ultimately, improvement. When individuals feel empowered to observe, question, and reimagine their routines, a culture of innovation naturally begins to emerge. KAIZEN™, after all, is not just a business strategy—it’s a way of life grounded in curiosity, intention, and continuous learning.

WWA Studios: A Culture Ready for Change
It was clear that WWA Studios had already laid a strong foundation for embracing the KAIZEN™ mindset. From introducing new team members and celebrating internal milestones, to adopting data-driven tools like Rapport3 and enhancing sustainability efforts, WWA is actively seeking ways to evolve with intention and purpose.
The discussion around KAIZEN™ fit seamlessly into this spirit of growth, resonating particularly with the team’s desire to:
- Prioritise client value in every process
- Empower individuals to question the status quo
- Pursue low-cost, high-impact innovations
- Build momentum through clear, consistent communication
Shaping What Comes Next
As Practice Day drew to a close—with walking tours, strategic partner reflections, and even a friendly round of darts at the Flight Club—it became clear that continuous improvement is not just a passing theme but a mindset that resonated deeply with the WWA team. The energy and openness shown throughout the day revealed a group not only willing to reflect but truly eager to evolve.
Looking ahead, the real impact of this session will be measured not in grand gestures, but in the small, consistent actions that follow. Whether it’s revisiting how projects are initiated, questioning long-held routines, or seeking out ways to create more value for clients, the KAIZEN™ mindset offers a framework to guide WWA’s next steps. Change does not require dramatic reinvention—it begins with awareness, intention, and the courage to take the first step.
Kaizen Institute remains committed to supporting organisations like WWA Studios in building cultures where learning is continuous, ideas are shared freely, and people are empowered to make meaningful contributions every day. We are excited to witness how WWA will carry the spirit of Practice Day forward, transforming curiosity into action and reflection into sustainable progress.
